GPS - based system placed within in year ?
Ministry of road transport and Highway ( union minister Nitin Gadkari ) said India will implement a GPS-based toll collection system and put an end to all toll booths within a year.
What is GPS - based toll collection system?
It means that toll collection will happen with help of GPS (Global Positioning System).
The toll money (toll tax) will be collected based on GPS imaging (on vehicles).
What system currently used?
- FASTag already makes the toll collection system automatic, the changes deducted directly from the linked bank accounts.
- FASTag affixed on the windscreen of a vehicle. This helps you, not to stop your vehicles at toll plazas to pay the toll.
- FASTag works on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
Benefits of FASTag?
- FASTag ensures their no middlemen collecting toll.
- Revenue directly transfers to the bank, which reduces the need for armed security.
Issue?
- Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said 93% of the vehicle were paying toll using FASTag - a system that facilitates electronic payment of free at toll plazas seamlessly - but the remaining 7% had still not adopted it despite paying double the toll.
- After all the tool lanes are still clogged.
How does GPS-based toll collection work?
- The new tolling system will bring about a free flow satellite-based ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) system that uses GPS and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service).
- GPRS is already used to provide cellular-based data services by several telecommunication providers in India, and all commercial vehicles sold after 2019 are equipped with an inbuilt Vehicle Tracking System (VTS).
- As such, the GPS-based system will further help make toll collection more efficient, by allowing vehicle movements across the country to be tracked accurately.
Implementation in India
- In India, the entire National highway network will have to be geo-fenced for the GPS-based ETC to effectively monitor the entry and exit of vehicles.
- Meanwhile, India's own geo-positioning system NAVIC has recently been found to offer even more accurate location data than GPS, giving it even more impetus for nationwide adoption.
Few concerns
- We are aware, the locals around a toll booth within a 5km radius usually exempt.
- Based on the GPS system, how this will be implemented remains to be seen.
- If the GPS-related account doesn't have money in it, how will the tool tax be collected?
- Concerns regarding privacy will need to be addressed effectively.
Q) Name the first country which implements ETC (Electronic Toll Collection)?
- Japan
- South Korea
- Norway
- China
