The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is located in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, India. It got the tag of World Heritage site in 2014.
Facts about the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP):
1) The total area under Park administration (National Park, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Ecozones) is 1171 sq km, which is together reckoned to as the Great Himalayan National Park Conservation Area (GHNPCA).
2) A buffer zone of 5 km from the Park's boundary was delineated as an Ecozone.
3) In 2010, both the Sainj and Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuaries were added to GHNP.
4) GHNPCA habitats to numerous rare and threatened species including the Western Tragopan, Chir Pheasant, Asiatic Black Bear, Himalayan Musk Deer Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep, Serow, and Himalayan Tahr.
5) It is a habitat for numerous flora and fauna species, including approximate mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, annelids, mollusks, and insects.
6) Flora and fauna species are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
7) Nearly 25 Threatened IUCN Red-listed plant species are listed from the park.
8) The boundaries of GHNP touches with the recently established (2010) Khirganga National Park, the Pin Valley National Park in Trans-Himalaya, Rupi-Bhabha Wildlife Sanctuary in Sutlej watershed, and Kanawar Wildlife Sanctuary.
9) The GHNPCA includes the Upper Mountain glacial and snowmelt water source origins of the westerly flowing Jiwa Nal, Sainj, and Tirthan Rivers and the north-westerly flowing Parvati River which are all headwater tributaries to the River Beas and subsequently, the Indus River.
